In August 2020, during the height of the pandemic, our badass group of women adventured to Great Sand Dunes NP. In this drawing, you can see some details that were actual experiences on our trip. You can see the mountain range in the background, which to my surprise was visible in almost 360 degrees. We camped in the dune field, so you can see our campsite and our colorful light glow (we are all festival flow-artists, so we obviously brought our poi and space whips). We saw a MASSIVE green meteor hit the atmosphere right over our heads, so I knew it had to be in the piece somewhere. You can also see Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter, representing my best friends and I: the Cosmic Squad. The hourglass to me represents what it felt like in 2020… just time. Creeping by slowly, day by day, night by night, not at all sure what day it is. Feeling like it had been years since we had done anything interesting at all, and at the same time feeling like normalcy was just “yesterday”.

I love looking back at my original sketch because I created it ON the plane to Denver for our Dunes adventure. There were so many adjustments after the trip as well, because you just have to BE there to really capture the details in a drawing!
